A recent CBC Fifth Estate episode about polygamy has sparked debate amongst Muslims. The investigative report featured an imam who officiates marriages for men who want to have a second wife. Some of these marriages are kept secret from the first wife.
Because the marriages are not recognized or registered under Canadian law, the women in these relationships forgo their legal rights and are often treated unjustly by their husbands. So now we have to ask: Why was the practice of polygamy permitted according to the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad? And should polygamy be practiced in Canada?
