Maha Panna Vihara

In 2004, Panna Sangha decided to build “Maha Panna Vihara” in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where the bhikkhunis will live, study about life and practice Buddhism to purify themselves.

The Architecture of Maha Panna Vihara: the Idea of “Emptiness”

The original idea of architecture of Maha Panna Vihara was created in meditation. One evening, after walking meditation the bhikkhunis sit in the room and waited for Master’s Dharma speaking. Bhikkhuni Dhammabiti suddenly asked Master, “Master, would you please say something about the architecture of monastery in the ancient time?” At that moment, Bhikkhunis Kammatthana just finished her meditation and told us what she had seen during meditation.

The Construction Plan

In early 2014, Maha Panna Vihara officially launched the construction of our new Vihara on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, Cambodia; the main buildings will be constructed in late 2017. It is expected to become a landmark monastery where a seed of Mahayana Buddhism will grow and blossom in the land of Theravada. The architecture of Maha Panna Vihara will be built by stones, the most ancient material in the world, but its skeleton uses steel, the most modern construction material. The building complex of Maha Panna Vihara will consist of the main hall, inner meditation hall, outer meditation hall, library, lecture rooms, kitchen, and housing for laypeople. Surrounded by thousands of trees, Maha Panna Vihara will be a peaceful place, protected from city noises.
